DAMAGE

« on: April 25, 2008, 02:59:42 PM »

Well I don't think we will ever wipe them out, Have to say I think they are here to stay but as long as we keep controlling them like we have been for years anyway I think things are ok.
If we wiped them all out then we would be cutting our own throats, Well those of us that collect the fur and sell it would be, I say lets use them what they were brought here for in the first place cause I'm sure we can do a better job of it now than what they could have back in the early days lol they didn't really have a clue I don't think not as how to hunt or trap them but as to their fast growth and breeding at twice a year caught them by surprise and so it began.
I think we are lucky to have them in a lot of ways.

Would be good to hear others thoughts on this.

Regards.

Yes well put Sean, my opinion of them is I strongly dislike them but if they can put a bit of spending money into our back pockets then why kill them all, after all they do have their uses in the fur trade. Wink

The main question really is can we destroy the whole population Huh NO DOC has been trying for many many years with their vile poisons and not just 1080 there were others as well but they will be around for good I think, Do they harm the native bush well of course they do but not such extent that they are destroying it all otherwise that would have also happened many years ago.
The general public will believe DOC and other government departments because they think that these so called pros know what they are on about, By coming up with statistics and reports to stun and shock people into believing that the only way is to eliminate the whole lot with the use of 1080 and other such poisons hence it also gives them a lot of support by a lot of miss informed members of the public.
Poison is not the future we want, Not just to save the possums for fur but it is also having an effect on people and this big lump of dirt which we call home.
With all th anti 1080 groups around the country constantly protesting and fighting for the ban of 1080 DOC just laugh in our faces they will continue to waste tax payers money on 1080 no matter what we seem to do they just don't care It's as simple as that.

if I had the power to instantly kill all possum in New Zealand instantly I would do it.

yes there is a fur trade and I will be happy with the pocket money I get from it and they are fun to hunt. But it would be so great to get new zealands wild life back to what it was before all the introduced wildlife made such a huge impact.

The Rabit, possum, rat and other vermin, I'd be happy if they could all just vanish instantly.

Cant help but think they are here to stay though.

The funny thing is that most wildlife we have in NZ was introduced except of course the native stuff that was already here.
Think of it this way, Everything or mostly everything that we are legally allowed to hunt in NZ was introduced and is mostly considered a pest & to say it would be good to get rid of the lot I think would be a bad thing, Hunters across the country would be really gutted especiall the really dedicated balls to the wall hunters because it's their life.
I sorta feel the same way about possums and the bonus is I know that we will never get rid of them so I'm safe. Grin

I guess then we will just have to keep on doing our part and go out and do the hard work that DOC and the government should be doing if they would just get off their arses and do. There should be an incentive for people who are out of work to start a program and eradicate these pests but then a lot of people are unaware of the fur price. I have to admit I didn't know that the fur was worth as much as it is, if I did then I would have been plucking for years. So I say publicize the fur industry more and get the people off their arses to try and make a difference.

it would suck not having anything to hunt but it would be so good for our native animals and plants. So good infact that eventually some may get to good enough numbers that they could be hunted?

It will never happen but that's just how I feel about it, and I know not everyone would be happy if that could happen.

i think we will never get rid of the possums because there is over 70 million of them but they are fun to shoot and trap-plus you can earn money from the fur and skins and there fear is really warm
